General Music
CMS general music classes provide opportunities to explore standards of music. We base our curriculum on the 9 National Association for Music Education standards (visit their website) as well as the VT GLE music standards (view the VT DOE pdf document, pages 7-12). We have recently incorporated Speaking and Listening Common Core Standards. (click here for a .pdf of grades 6-8 Speaking and Listening standards, page 49). Performance Arts is a new class, and offers many different exploratory subject areas of study and performance. Our classes are comprised of, but not limited to, the following topics and projects.
Grade 6 Music
Currently in 6th Grade Music the Essential Question we are working on is: "How is music organized to create emotions?" Our Focus Question will be changing from " How is rhythm organized?" to How is pitch organized using rhythm to create different patterns of sound?" We will be moving from composing drum songs to starting our recorder unit, incorporating rhythm reading from the drum unit into the reading of pitches and rhythm starting with the recorder unit.

Grade 7 and 8 Performing Arts
We recently completed a Public Speaking unity in Performing Arts, where students chose an event from their lives and retold it to the class using enough description to really make the class feel as if they were at the event, too. Currently in 7th and 8th Grade Performing arts we are working on plays that address the topic of bullying. Our Essential Question is: "How can a performance of any art form move you to an emotional state?" The Focus Question we are breaking down in class is: "What are the technical things that happen on stage to create a good performance?" Our next unit will focus on how to critique performances using these techniques.
